"Burning Up The Air" - About the Book
The Notes and Sources
Space limitations made it impossible to provide a complete annotation of the sources for the information
in Burning Up the Air within the published text of the book. Steve Elman and Alan Tolz
provided credit to substantial source works on pages 341- 346 of the published text, but they felt
that detailed notes would help those readers interested in more information about Jerry Williams's
life and work. They have provided those detailed notes here.
This approach has two important advantages: it allows interested readers to use the search functions
of their computers to find information quickly, and it provides the authors with the opportunity
to provide updates as necessary.
Comments from Steve Elman and Alan Tolz:
This is currently a work in progress. We hope to have all the notes and sources posted by April 1,
2008.
Our notes are keyed to the chapters and pages of Burning Up the Air as published in its
hardbound edition. Click on a chapter heading below and you will be directed to the notes for that
chapter. You will then find each page headed by a page indication that will allow you to search quickly
through the text. For example, if you wish to read the notes on information found on page 25 of the
book, click on Chapter 2 below and then look for “page 25” using the search function of your computer.
Our notes are more than references to our research data. Some readers have already pointed out errors
in the first edition. We are doing our best to correct those errors at the appropriate points in
the notes and we hope to redress the problems in future printings of Burning Up the Air ,
if that is possible.
If you wish a full perspective on any point in the book, we suggest that you look at the notes for
the preceding and following pages as well as the notes for the particular page that piqued your curiosity.
We cite many sources from the Internet. Because web pages are subject to frequent change, we also
indicate the dates on which we captured the information from the various web sites.
